Behind our counter at the store we have a large 36x36 canvas painted with chalkboard paint so it can change with the seasons. After I took the Christmas scene down I needed a quick fix to change it to our up coming holiday.

I simply glued some large cream letters on and added hearts made out of book pages.

We also had fun making garlands out of paper hearts and draping them over a display table.

So easy and so cute!

As I was flipping through the pages of the new Romantic Country magazine it was fun to see many of my favorite things.

I was so inspired by Jennifer Lanne's paintings that I used one of them as a painting exercise in one of my very first painting classes.

About 18 years ago we purchased Teena Flanner's paper mache originals at the Atlanta Gift Show. I believe she was one of the first to bring glitter back. We still stop by her showroom for a quick visit when we are in Atlanta.

We still have a few originals in our Joyworks museum.

I always love a good flea market...especially when I have traveled to Europe.

This rose painting that I found in Paris is one of my favorite purchases.

I am green with envy over this awesome stove...

It would look so cute in my kitchen with all my jadeite...

My Joyworks Blog is featured in Romantic Country in
"The Blog Spot".

I was so excited and honored when I received an email from the editor, Mary Forsell, asking if I would be interested in being a featured blog.

My friend Elise Marie Photography came to the shop and took some pictures for me and created this great collage.

It has been so much fun to share this excitement with my friend and co-worker Shelly who writes a blog called Bungalow Bling.

We have been trying to get our hands on the magazine all week...the other day we almost attacked Bill the postman hoping he would have a copy...:)
Shelly finally found copies today and brought them to the store. The magazine is beautiful and filled with all my favorite things! It's on the stands today so I highly recommend running out and buying one...you won't be disappointed.
I still can't believe I'm in a magazine...a little dream come true!

Today Joyworks was featured in the Everett Herald.
I was showing the photographer all of our beautiful trees and holiday decorations and they chose a picture of me to make the paper...too funny...:)

"A lot of people come here to buy ornaments," Johnson said. "They give an ornament every year to children or grandchildren."

But Joyworks isn't just an ornament store. There's plenty of home decor, jewelry and hand bags to peruse.

In the past year, Johnson's daughters have been responsible for expanding Joyworks' clothing assortment, which includes ladies' dresses, sweaters and skirts. The shop also carries an array of cold-weather accessories. Like the rest of the items in the shop, these tend to have a vintage flair -- with layered fur scarves, flower embellishments on caps and soft, lacy patterned fingerless gloves.

"We try to keep it fun," Johnson said.

Blue Jars and Bulbs

This year I having been loving decorating with blue mason jars. When we decorated the beach house for Christmas we used around 40 jars in various sizes. We filled the bottoms with rock salt and candles and lined them up in all the window sills.

At home I started my paperwhite bulbs in a large jar...while I'm waiting for them to bloom I placed a few artifial blooms in the mix...:)

I'm also enjoying my blooming paperwhites that I recieved from Luanne for a hostess gift.

At Joyworks we carry solar lids for mason jars which are great for outside but I wanted to bring the look inside for winter...

So I took a battery operated tea light,turned it on and hot glued it to the inside of the lid of a jar.

It works great! My little creation isn't perfect because you do have to take the candle off and glue it on every time but I'm working on a solution for that... :)

I have been wanting to make a JOY sign using glitter letters for awhile. I purchased the large cardboard letters at a craft store,spray painted them silver,and sprinkled with fine and chunky silver glitter. I then hot glued them to a vintage cupboard door.

Our Christmas Baby Window this year is full of Sock Monkeys.

I was so inspired, I thought I would try to make one. I searched on-line for sock monkey patterns and found quite a few for free...it looked pretty easy...
Well,I bought the wrong kind of socks,I don't have a sewing machine but...I made it work! :)

I even painted a little picture to help complete the window.

It's now hanging on the far right panel...

When I was trying to come up with a theme for our booth I knew I wanted it to have industrial feel... My brother and I built a clothing rack out of pipe parts,made a hat rack out of salvaged screws and wood,bought a metal rolling cart,and I just had to have this metal stairs on wheels thing straight from the junk yard...

The night before the show I thought of the theme "Garment District"...which went perfect with my industrial theme... I used vintage mannequins,measuring tapes,rulers,buttons,spools,signs,hat stands, etc... If I had more time I would have brought in some vintage sewing machines...maybe next time...

Jill and I designed these cute lace aprons for the opening night...We have some for sale at the store for $28.00 if anybody would like one.
Loved the hat...I plan on ordering some more of these soon!

By the time we brought in all our clothing and accessories it filled up the booth...
Big store...Small booth. We covered up my most of the fixtures...but I still think you can see my vision... :)

Birthdays Celebrated Joyworks Style

Two birthdays to celebrate this time.

Rita who's birthday is tomorrow, so all you shopping at Joyworks please give her a big birthday greeting.

Shelly who celebrated her birthday last friday. They both still claim to be 50!

We were all able to come in on our days off to help celebrate. Brunch was served, quiche, cinnamon rolls and fruit.

Shelly and Rita received lots of fun goodies including darling pumpkins carved out with flowers arranged in them. You can see the white pumpkin in the photo. I'm so going to do that and Amy arranged fall leaves with sunflowers and it looked amazing.

Today is set up for Ruffles and Rust. We hope to see all of you either friday night, if you were lucky enough to get tickets as they are all sold out or we'll see you saturday. Please drop by our booth and say hi to Jana and I.

Everytime a bell rings an angel gets her wings!

This is the theme of our first Christmas Tree of the season at Joyworks.
A little decorating tip...I spray painted the white wings first with cream spray paint and then lightly dusted them with gray spray paint to make them look vintage. I then glittered around the edges of the feathers and added silk ribbons.

We decorated with wings,angels,bells,crosses,crowns,cherubs,and lots of glitter...

Picker Sister

I've been watching this fun new show on Lifetime called Picker Sisters.
Two girls travel around picking up junk and having it made into cool furniture.
I always find good junk and have great ideas but I'm just not handy with power tools.
The other day it came to me that my brother is quite skilled at building things...we would make a great team...I could be the Picker Sister.

Well this is one of our attempts...I found this vintage bed frame and thought it would make the best bench. My brother came over and I told him my idea and waited for the magic to happen.
All I can say is that it wasn't like on television... Nothing fit,the wood split,it's not level,I cut my foot,it's a little high,has too many legs,and it's not very sturdy...

But it's finished and I think it turned out pretty cute...
We probably won't make another bench but I'm sure I'll think of something else.
Because I am the Picker Sister!

On Saturday we had a 50th Wedding Anniversary Party for my parents at Birch Bay. They rented a wonderful house on the beach and it couldn't have been a more beautiful day.

We soaked them in bleach and let them dry in the sun.

At the Beach!
So Different from yesterday where everybody came out to play.
Love this vintage inspired beach scene canvas which we carry at the store.

It was still beautiful but I spent most of the day inside...

The water was so calm it would have been a perfect morning to take the row boat out.

But instead I watched the birds...

Brought the oars inside and set up a new lamp from Joyworks...

Painted a couple of pictures...

And drank lots of coffee and looked through many magazines.
It was a nice and relaxing day.

Sunday Style

On Sunday mornings I love to get up early and watch my design shows on HGTV.
One of my new favorites is Secret from a Stylist.
Emily the designer does a style diagnostic of each couple and determines their individual styles and blends them together to get the perfect look for their space.

Dean and I have very different tastes and it has been a challenge to combine the two...but I must say that after 13 years my look is starting to take over.

I think Emily would say Dean's taste is Mid Century Mexican Blanket and mine would be Cottage Chic.

Our combined look would Mid Century Cottage Blanket...I think that might work... :)

You can quickly take something plain and make it into something special.

Today I took an ordinary fedora...

Today my parents got the keys to their new little beach house.
Our family couldn't wait to help move a few things in and have a little celebration.

As we unpacked we were so excited to start decorating...

We liked what we put together in about an hour...

I found this vintage photograph at a flea market and knew it would be fun to display in the store.

I brought out the kitty masks...

After the royal wedding I thought it would be fun to bring in some cute hats and fascinators.

I think it's important to bring an element of fun in to the store mix...
Girls of all ages love trying on hats!

Maybe Kate will come to Snohomish during their visit to America.
How fun would that be!

We celebrated Amy's Birthday yesterday at Joyworks all American Style.

Red,white,and blue was the theme for the party.

A delicious and festive brunch was served.

Cute party favors and decorations completed the look.

Dean spotted a metal stand on the side of the road for FREE and thought I might like it for the store.

We set out for a walk to go check it out and stopped to talk to our neighbors on the way. I admired the peonies in their garden and they said I could have one...so pretty!

Love the stand...What a great find! We will be able to use it for all kinds of things.
